Nancy Drew is a girl detective (in the town of River Heights) who is working on a case involving burglaries...Lawrence McNabb is a locksmith (a person who makes or repairs locks and keys) who is working with thieves (by giving~such keys to article~locations)...Charlie, a security~guard, is tied~with~ropes as Nancy hides in a closet in Pastor Murray's office (in a church)...a burglary is~in~progress and Nancy is found by thieves Steve and Gary...Nancy promises to make~a~bargain with Chief McGinnis of the River Heights Police Departgirlt if the criminals agree to give up...a bargain is made and police soon arrive...Nancy sneaks out of the church and police arrest Steve and Gary...Nancy's friends Bess Marvin, George Fayne, and Ned Nickerson arrive as well as (news~)photo~graphers and Carson Drew (Nancy's father), an attorney...Ned is about to give Nancy a box then Carson and Nancy leave in Nancy's light~blue roadster (an auto~mobile having an open body, a single seat for two or three persons, and a trunk [or rumble~seat])~convertible (having a canvas~top that can be raised or lowered)~auto~mobile on their way to California...Carson has business there, and would like Nancy to give up being a detective while~staying...a stop is made at the Drew home, where Nancy lives with her father and a house~keeper, Hannah Gruen...Ned arrives and gives Nancy the box...in~it is a (gift~of~a) compass adjusted to point~toward River Heights...Nancy explains how she and her father will be staying in the house of Dehlia Draycott, a movie~actress who vanished mysteriously then returned only to leave this world via a swimming~pool...Carson and Nancy take a train to Los Angeles (,California), where an auto~mobile is rented and Dehlia's home driven to...there, Barbara Barbara, of Heritage Real Estate company, is greeted who shows Nancy and Carson the home...Nancy is frightened by a ghost that turns out to be a projected~image of Dehlia...Leshing is greeted, who is the~homes'~care taker (and lives close~by [in an apartgirlt])...that night Nancy is about to study some notes on Dehlia that she has brought when what do you suppose but the folder containing~such is gone!..Nancy tele~phones the Los Angeles Police Departgirlt to report the vanishing of both the folder and (her) shoes...foot~steps are heard and Leshing is tele~phoned, who arrives...noone (sic) is found but Nancy sees boxes with Dehlia's books inside and Nancy begins to read...a note from Dehlia (to Z) is inside speaking of her vanishing and~of the need to create a will that will provide for someone...the next day Nancy attends school in Los Angeles...Corky, Inga (sibling of Corky), and Trish are students (of the~school) who are greeted...Nancy speaks with the principal and watches a basket~ball game at the school...Corky starts choking and Nancy performs the Heimlich Girleuver and CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation [a life~saving technique])...it turns out to be a trick~played on Nancy and Nancy returns to the estate...that~night Nancy attempts to read Dehlia's journal and once again hears~foot~steps...in a down~stairs room, a door reveals a film~projector with canisters of motion~picture~film inside...the films are Dehlia's scenes in some of (Dehlia's) movies and Nancy watches~such...Dehlia says her parts relatively~correctly and scenes are re~filmed...Dehlia needs to stop...Leshing enters and tells Nancy that guests are not allowed to watch the footage...Nancy asks if Leshing understands where Dehlia vanished~to, and Leshing does not...the next day at school, Corky apologizes...Nancy asks Corky to stop by and asks Corky about Dehlia and Z...Corky is not familiar with Z and says Dehlia never~had~children...photos of Dehlia show her looking~pregnant wearing a robe with an X on it...Nancy and Corky visit Union Station where a motion~picture is being filmed...a costume person believes Nancy to be an extra and pushes her onto the set...(as) Nancy and Corky walk~away, the X from the robe is seen (to~be) palm trees in a hotel logo (The Twin Palms)...Nancy heads to~such to find that records of Dehlia were burned in a fire...Nancy checks a hospital for birth records to find that only a court order can give permission to view them...individual~doctors' files may be seen, and a clerk gives Nancy a location...there, Nancy finds three babies (Martine Dahlberg, Jane Brighton, and Susan Thebits) born around~the time Dehlia's would~have~been (were she pregnant)...Nancy researches the names and visits~some...a person named Jane Brighton is greeted, who is adopted...Jane tells of never being familiar with her parents and has a child of her own, named Allie...Nancy tells Jane that she believes Jane is the child of Dehlia...the next day Nancy tells Carson of working on a herstory project...a tele~phone~call threatens Nancy to not investigate Dehlia further...the next day Nancy is at school and an SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) almost hits Corky and Nancy...Nancy remembers the type (but there is no license~number)...the next day, Nancy visits the office of Dashiel Biedermeyer, who is Dehlia's attorney...Dashiel gives a business~card, but is busy...Nancy returns to Jane's home, where Jane is no longer interested in Nancy investigating her family...Nancy watches Dehlia's movies on DVD that~night and hears a piece~of~script: "the will is in the Chinese box"...the next day Nancy asks Leshing about Dehlia owning Chinese pieces and Leshing says that the pieces are sold...in a tele~phone book the name of an Asian store (K.G. Louie) is~seen circled...Ned arrives, who has driven Nancy's roadster to Los Angeles...Ned, Corky, and Nancy visit an establishgirlt, where Inga and Trish show~up...later, everyone goes~to K.G. Louie's and searches every Chinese box for a will...none is found...a bomb is seen in the back seat of Nancy's auto~mobile that Nancy tries to stop by cutting wires, then throws into a sewer~hole (where it explodes!)..the SUV is seen driving~away...the next morning Nancy is working on a painting and sees a crooked panel in the wall...she finds it to be the entrance to a~secret~passage and Nancy explores (as Ned and Corky wait [outside])...the passage leads to the near~by apartgirlt~complex...the next day at school Nancy gives invitations to the other students to her birthday party...when Nancy drives to give one to Jane and Allie, it is found they no longer live at their~place...that~weekend~is Nancy's birthday and Corky helps place~aesthetics for the party...guests arrive and Nancy sees Leshing in the secret~passage...Leshing leaves, and there is another threatening tele~phone call...Trish cannot breathe so Nancy performs emergency aid...Carson returns to see a wild~party, but is glad Nancy is being normal...the next day Nancy sees a cellular~tele~phone left as a birthday~gift love, dad...the next day, Jane visits, who has lost custody of her daughter (Allie)...what is more, someone has been threatening her not to prove she is the child of Dehlia...Carson agrees to help, so speaks with Dashiel Biedermeyer...Nancy watches one of Dehlia's movies with Jane and sees one of the Chinese boxes from K.G. Louie's...the character in the movie makes the figurine (dragon) on the box bow and a secret~panel is~re~vealed...Nancy rushes back to Chinatown, where at K.G. Louie's, Nancy is allowed to view the boxes one~more~time...Nancy makes the dragon bow and a secret~panel is found, with Dehlia's~will~inside!...Nancy tele~phones Carson but Carson stops and asks Nancy what number she is calling~from...as Carson did not purchase (Nancy) a cellular~tele~phone, Nancy hangs~up, but is grabbed by~two~individuals...the SUV is viewn and Nancy loses consciousness...she awakes in the projector~room of a motion~picture~theatre...Nancy escapes and is able to return to her roadster that crashes when hit by the SUV...Nancy awakes in a hospital where Carson is, and Nancy tells she has~been~detectiving...Dashiel Z.
